OET Ocupational English Test

INTRODUCTION

The OET (Occupational English Test) is a well-respected test of English language for healthcare professionals. Developed over 30 years ago, it is now backed by Cambridge Assessment.

As an alternative to the IELTS exam it allows students to study general medical English and English for specific medical professions.

OET is available for the following 12 professions: dentistry, dietetics, medicine, nursing, occupational therapy, optometry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, podiatry, radiography, speech pathology and veterinary science.

Format

OET assesses listening, reading, speaking and writing. The listening and reading parts have the same content for all healthcare professionals. The speaking and writing parts are specific to profession, based on typical workplace situations.

It is a paper- based examination where grades range from A to E and the score validity is limited to 2 years.

When are the OET results published?

You will find your results available in your online portal approximately 17 working days after the test date. Hard copies with then be posted to each candidate a further 10 days after this.

Recognition

The OET is recognised as proof of your English language skills in a number of countries. It is widely recognised by Medical Councils and Universities in Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand and the Republic of Ireland.

Registration and Exam Dates

There are exam sittings every month. Currently, the only locations to sit the exam in Spain are Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela. To register contact OET at: https://www.occupationalenglishtest.org

The exam costs 390€ to sit all four parts. Individual parts of the exam can be done at a reduced cost.

Difference between IELTS and OET

Format: IELTS has an Academic and General format whereas the OET focuses on English for health professionals. Two parts of the test are for all health professionals and two parts are for one of twelve specific health professions.

Recognition and Acceptance: IELTS is now the most popular English exam in the world for people wishing to study or work abroad. OET is a specialist exam for healthcare professionals and is therefore accepted by a smaller number of institutions and authorities.

Cost: OET is more expensive than IELTS

Availability: There are many more locations at present to sit the IELTS exam.
